Client conflict doesn't come out of nowhere...
It feels like it does. One day everything is fine, and the next day you’re staring at an email or Slack message that makes your stomach drop. But sticky situations almost always have warning signs you missed, didn’t recognize, or chose to ignore because it’s easier to brush it under the rug and you didn’t want to seem difficult.
Most conflict warning signs are small:
- A missed deadline or milestone that isn’t addressed.
- A feedback round that goes quiet for two weeks.
- A misunderstanding or miscommunication.
- A “quick question” that turns into a two-hour rabbit hole.
- A request that’s outside the scope, but feels rude to push back on.
These moments don’t look like conflict in the moment.
They feel like normal client management stuff. But client blow-ups and project problems typically come from small moments of friction, tension, frustration, and misaligned expectations piling up — and every one of those moments could have been diffused and handled differently if you knew what to look for, what to say, and what to do.

You feel it immediately. Your stomach tightens, your face gets hot, you start to breathe faster, and you start sweating. Then, your brain starts cycling through worst-case scenarios faster than you can even think. It’s the absolute worst.

I’ve dealt with conflict big and small. It’s been my fault, it’s been my client’s fault, and it’s been caused by something neither of us control. And yes, I’ve lost clients. But I got through it and my business is still standing today.
